Secure File Transfers
Penguin Webs works hard to insure the safety and security of our clients Data. To that end, we do not allow standard FTP transfers of electronic files to and from our servers. It is a well know fact that standard FTP is not secure. Standard FTP sends your Username and Password, in text format, from your computer to the server.
Simply put, even a beginning hacker with little experience can download simple instructions from the internet that will teach them how to see/view/read your Username and Password when you log-in to an FTP server to upload or download a file.
Once they have your log-in information, it is then easy for them to download all of your files, erase them, or even upload a virus to the server that could wipe out the entire hard drive.
In order to protect our clients data, we have purchased and installed a state-of-the-art SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) Server and make it available to all of our clients for transfering data to and from your computer and our servers.
This SFTP technology utilizes 128 bit encryption for sending the log-in information (Username and Password) as well as for the entire transfer of the electronic file that you upload or download. This is the same type of security and encryption that Penguin Webs uses for secure credit card transactions and that Amazon and E-Bay use when you make an on-line purchase.
Getting Started
In order to help you get started using our Secure and Safe File Transfer system, we have provided the following information:
- Download the SFTP Client (1.6 mb .zip file)
- Unzip the file to a folder on your computer
- When unzipped, you should have a new file with the name winscp382setup.exe on your computer
- Find this file and double-click on it to run the SFTP set-up program
- The install will complete very quickly and you will see an open window with the title, "WinSCP Login
- Open the E-mail that you were sent from Penguin Webs that contains your SFTP Log-in details.
- Use the information in the E-mail to fill in the appropriate information in the WinSCP Login dialouge box
- When you have entered the 3 pieces of information - Host Name, User Name, and Password, then click on the "Save" button which will save your Log-In information so that you will not need to enter it each time you log in.
- NOTE: If you are not on your regular computer (one that belongs to you and you are the only one that uses it) then do not "Save" the information because an unauthorized user might gain access to it.
- Now click the "Login" button. This will connect you safely and securely to the File Storage Area on the Server.
- Now you can simply locate the file you want to upload from your computer, which will appear on the left side of the screen, and then drag it into the right-hand side of the window which will up-load it to the Server.
- That's it - your done!
- If you have any problems or questions with the install or with uploading/downloading files, please Contact Us or call us at (913) 780-2877 for help.
